Staff Reporter AMA International University-Bangladesh (AIUB) has been renamed American International University-Bangladesh (AIUB). Vice chancellor of the AIUB Ms Carmen Z Lamagna announced the change of name at a press conference at Hotel Sonargaon yesterday. Pro-Vice chancellor of the University Dr Tofazzal Hossain, Director of Administration and Treasury Hasanul A Hasan and director of International Affairs Ishtiaque Abedin were present. Ms Carmen Z Lamagna said the change of the name has been formally approved by the government in September. She said AIUB was founded in 1995 as a joint venture with its Philippine counter-part. Since 1996 it has been 100 per cent owned by Bangladesh. Ms Carmen said the University organisation and structure would remain unaffected and the academic activities would be co-ordinated under the same management team of Board of Trustees and Academic Council. Replying to a question the vice chancellor said the University awards scholarship to 10 per cent of the students as against government mandatory 5 per cent and 4 per cent of those are need-based. A total of 43 students graduated from the University in the first batch in 1999 followed by 40 in the year 2000. This year 70 students graduated from the University. The AIUB offers under-graduate courses in its School of Science and School of Engineering while both under graduate and post-graduate courses are offered in the School of Business. These courses are B.Sc in Computer Science, B. Sc in Computer Engineering, B. Sc in Electronics and Communication Engineering, B. Sc in Electrical and Electronics Engineering, Bachelor in Business Administration (BBA) specialising in Management Information System (MIS), and Masters in Business Administration (MBA) specialising in different fields. Ishtiaque Abedin said the University will move to its new permanent campus at Sreepur in Gazipur district within one and a half years. He said 92 full-time and 12 part-time teachers comprise the faculty of the University, three of whom are from abroad. The AIUB has about 2100 students now including 45 foreigners. He said the cost per semester for a student in the university is around Tk 30,000. |
